No AI strategy survives misaligned incentives.

If leaders say “quality matters,” but reward speed, automation will prioritize speed.

If leaders say “judgment is critical,” but reward volume, AI will amplify volume.

AI does not interpret nuance. It reinforces what is measured.

This is why so many organizations experience unintended consequences after AI adoption. The system is working perfectly—it’s just optimizing the wrong objective.

Before scaling AI further, leaders must ask:

  • What behaviors are we truly rewarding?

  • What metrics define success?

  • What trade-offs are we implicitly encouraging?

The organizations that thrive will be those whose incentives align with their stated values.

AI makes misalignment visible. It also makes it costly.
